Refugees in Lesvos, Greece

Moderne Barn Event to Support the Heroes of Lesvos, Greece

August 9, 2016
The Afya Foundation provides healthcare support to communities across the globe, including the citizens of Lesvos, Greece, who have generously embraced and cared for thousands of refugees.

On Thursday September 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Moderne Barn and the Afya Foundation will host an evening to benefit the people of Lesvos, who have dedicated time and resources to help refugees. The reception-style affair features an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres by Chef Ethan Kostbar, live Greek music, live and silent auctions, and brief presentations from Nick Livanos, proprietor of Moderne Barn, and Danielle Butin, Executive Director of Afya. The mission of the Afya Foundation is particularly close to the Livanos family, originally from the town of Molyvos, located on the island of Lesvos. Moderne Barn is located at 430 Bedford Road, Armonk.

Over the past year, Lesvos, Greece has been inundated with refugees from the Middle East, who are fleeing war and strife, leaving their homes to stay alive and provide a brighter future for their children. The Greek people have been thrust into the “first responder” role for all of Europe, accepting a humanitarian responsibility that is especially challenging given the economic crisis in Greece. Due to the high volume of incoming refugees, the only hospital on the island has been completely depleted of all essentials and is in dire need of even the most basic medical supplies.

In response to this refugee crisis in Greece, the Afya Foundation created Project SPORA - from the Greek word for sowing of seed - to bring together those who wish to support Greece in its time of need. Afya has already shipped three containers of critically-needed medical supplies and equipment to Greece with plans for many more.

The Livanos Family is honored to host this event to celebrate and support the heroes in their homeland. Reservations are requested by Friday September 19, and can be made by emailing mary.buckley@afyafoundation.org. The ticket price is $250 per person. Limited tickets will be available for same-day purchase at the door via credit card or check.
