St. Mary's Church 197 Hickory Kingdom Road Bedford, NY
By Nick Olivo As you head down Hickory Kingdom Road, you begin to
notice that the atmosphere of the Mianus River Valley is not quite the
same as it is in the newer portions of North Castle. The farther you go
down the road, you notice less and less modern homes and more homes
that look like they date back to the 1800’s surrounded by large scenic
properties. That is because many of these houses were, in fact, built
during the nineteenth century.
In the center of this historic
community lies Saint Mary’s Church, which can be found at the
intersection of Hickory Kingdom and East Middle Patent Roads. This
“classically beautiful and simple country church” was built by area
farmers in the mid-nineteenth century. The sign outside the church
dates the construction to the year 1851. However, local resident Tony
Godino, who has lived down the street from Saint Mary’s for all of his
life, thinks otherwise. He owns the diary of Mary Guion Brown, who
lived across the street from Saint Mary’s from 1800-1852. In this
diary, Mary writes that’s she is excited that the local people have
decided to build a church so close to her house, and that the wood had
been cut and that the construction would begin shortly. This entry is
dated: August, 1852.
Back then, the church held services every
Sunday for the residents of the Mianus River Valley, but now the
ecumenical church holds about six services every year. The most popular
of these tends to be the Christmas Service with the Reverend Paul
Briggs, of Antioch Baptist Church presiding, and during which the small
church is usually stuffed to the doors with people. Each service begins
with a ringing of the church bell, which has a mysterious inscription
on it. Tony Godino discovered, while cleaning the church bell that the
words “a gift from New York pilots” were written on the bell. Though no
one knows for sure, one could guess that the bell was donated by
shipping pilots, because the church was built before airplanes were
invented. For all those interested in attending services at Saint
Mary’s Church, a schedule of services at St. Mary’s is posted on the
bulletin board in front of the church.
