The Byram Hills Girls Golfing team has made their way into the New York state semi-finals on May 28. The varsity team has been playing since early spring. The season so far has been filled with hard work and enthusiasm. The section one tournament started off with the top 40 girls from Westchester high schools teeing off to make it to

the top 20 spots and the semi-finals which were played this past week at Whippoorwill Country Club. The golfers' scores of the two days are added up and the top 10 girls go to the state championship at SUNY Delhi. Byram Hills has three golfers in the tournament: Senior Kristina Grimaldis who placed 14th, Junior Kim Bacon who placed 13th, and Freshman Ally Steffen who placed 11th.

Frank Langworth, the Byram Hills Coach, said about coaching the team, "It's mainly for the kids. [Playing in the tournament] is a wonderful honor for them after a long season of hard work." The trio has represented Byram Hills High School in a major competition and they won't forget the experience shared out on the green.

Thanks, Bobcats, for a Great Season

May 30, 2014
This year’s Byram Hills’ baseball team melded together from the beginning of the season; some of the players even played ball with each other since grade school. On a sunny, cold preseason morning, the players, coaches and parents could hear good things happening with the quick snap of the ball in the glove and the crack of the bat. The team was practicing on the turf because the field wasn’t ready. They looked sharp and ready to play. They showed potential with a deep lineup of 10 possible pitchers that took them into the semi-finals on Wednesday, when they were shut down by Lakeland High School.

Lakeland turned the game around in the top of the 5th inning when Anthony Fava hit a grand slam over the center field fence with two outs. That opened the lead to 5-1. Lakeland added another run to win the semi-final sectional game 6-1, moving on to the finals on Saturday.

The Bobcats should hold their heads high with pride. They treated their fans to some good baseball this season. Every game went well beyond what was expected at the high school level.

Some players have the week off before they start summer ball. They should enjoy playing and know that their fans are cheering for them, whether they win or lose. See you next year at the Hills.

Bobcats Walk-off Win Leads to Shared League Title with Foxes

May 15, 2014
Byram Hills’ baseball team shares the league title with Fox Lane after the Bobcats won the second game of the season's series' two games against the Foxes on Wednesday, by a score of 2-1.

The Bobcats scored first when two batters were hit and put on base. They were followed by two batters that were walked, forcing in a run without a Byram Hills hit. The game was tied when Bobcats' Frankie Vesuvio stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vesuvio’s bloop single dropped in center field as the Bobcat’s only hit of the game. Vesuvio then stole second, moving into scoring position, and came home from third on a wild pitch on a strike-out by Bobcat Armend Pushka so as to score the winning run. “Sometimes you’ve got to strike out to win the game,” said Pushka to a Lohud reporter.

With Sectional play-offs next week, Byram’s record is now a lofty 14-4-1 and Fox Lane’s record is an impressive 14-4. It’s likely that both teams will be awarded a high seed for the Sectionals.

The Homestretch: The Battle of Mitts, Bats, and Wits
By A.J. Brodsky

May 13, 2014
The Mets and the Yankees aren't the only New York baseball rivalry. The competition on the high school level is just as intense. The Byram Hills Bobcats battled the Fox Lane Foxes on May 11 in a game of perseverance and strength. The teams were evenly

matched with Byram Hills’ record of 13-3-1 and Fox Lane's 9-3. Fox Lane, ranked number one in the league, was the favorite going into this game and won the home game with a final score of 2-1.

Going beyond the mere three runs, the two teams stepped up to the plate to put on an amazing match for the fans. Fox Lane's star pitcher, Andrew Workman, consistently clocked pitches at around 85 mph, keeping Byram scoreless until the third inning. Fox Lane was the first to score, putting their two runs on the board in the first inning. Bobcat Frankie Vesuvio answered back with an RBI double in the top of the third. The teams each applied their own determination and grit for the duration of the game.

The fans are an important part of the rivalry with both the Foxes' and Bobcats' lively cheers delivered from friends and family. The support shown for these teams made the players dig deep and play their hardest. The morale was high throughout the game, even when Byram was fighting to put up another run. The crowd cheered no matter what happened with either a “yay” for Byram or a “yay” for Fox Lane. The rivalry between these two teams was apparent--neither team would be satisfied walking away with a loss.

Batter Up - Spring Sports Begin at Byram Hills High School
March 24, 2014
This past week the high school teams shared the turf field during outdoor practice and rotated working out in the gym. Scrimmages are scheduled to start this week and the campus’s playing fields should be ready, but both are dependent on weather conditions.
The varsity and JV baseball teams practiced on Saturday and look ready for the opening of the season. The sounds of baseball were loud and clear as players cracked the ball off the bat, and throws were snatched with a snap of the glove. Baseball Coach Saunders said the varsity team has depth in pitching, which should carry it well into the season that has 20-in-league games scheduled.
Byram Hills teams for the spring include girls and boys lacrosse, baseball, softball, boys tennis, track and field, and golf. Go Bobcats!

Byram Hills Track Star Still Running Strong

May 4, 2014
Friday evening at Princeton University, Marc Violone (Byram Hills class of 2012) sped 1500 meters in 3:49.25.  That is the equivalent of a 4:07.5 mile.  His next race may come this weekend, May 10 and 11, at the Ivy League Championships (Heptagonals) scheduled at Yale University.
